Yet again, going hiking made me discover another very nice slice of heaven in Trinidad: Mermaid Pool. Hidden in the lush forest of Matura, this natural pool is a very inviting and serene to relax at.
Mermaid Pool’s temperature is just right, and I made sure to spend most of my time in the water, pretending to be a Mermaid 🙂

How to Get to Mermaid Pool?
The Hike to get to Mermaid Pool starts in Matura, which is a village located in North East Trinidad. It’s a 1.5 hour to 2 hour drive from the capital (on week-ends).
When you are driving North on the Toco Main Road, look out for the Nature Seeker’s office on your left hand side. Make a turn at the 1st street on your left hand side after passing in front of Nature Seeker’s office.
Stay on this narrow road until it becomes a dirt road. You can then park on the side and start the hike from there.
The trail isn’t marked, so I highly recommend that you are accompanied by an experienced guide.
Hike & Mermaid Pool: What To Expect?
It takes 30-45 minutes to reach Mermaid Pool from where you’d have parked. The hiking trail isn’t marked, so it’s best to hike with an experienced guide.
This hike is an easy one, rated 3 out of 8 on the scale of difficulty. It’s therefore kid-friendly. Just look out for the slippery rocks when walking alongside the river.
The Dragonflies, small fishes and large blue & black butterflies (presumably Morpho butterflies) one can spot there do add some magic to this serene spot. A dragonfly actually landed on my cheek while I was floating on my back.
As you get further away to the shore the water won’t be as transparent and will get deeper in some areas (16 feet in depth and more).
People who can’t swimming should stay close to the shore. There are several shallow spots for non-swimmers or kids.
Like in most rivers, beware of hidden boulders inside the river.
What To Bring Along to Mermaid Pool?
In addition to wearing a pair of shoes that has a sole with good grip, you may want to also pack a pair of water shoes for more comfort during your time in the river.
Of course, you must ensure to carry enough water, snacks. Think of carrying any medications you might need (allergies, etc.). A first aid kit and a flashlight could come in handy too should anything happen.
Do ensure that your electronic equipment (cellphone, non waterproof camera, keys, etc.) are properly secured in a waterproof pouch.
